How Do You Burn a 3-Wick Candle Correctly?

Candles add beautiful light and ambience to your home, creating a comforting scent and a lovely glow that makes your worries melt away. To completely keep your worries at ease, though, you need to know that you’re burning your candle correctly. Multi-wick candles are the hardest to burn correctly, especially 3-wick candles, since it’s an odd number of wicks. Keep reading to learn how to burn your 3-wick candle correctly.

Choose the Right Location

Setting up the perfect burn starts with setting up the perfect location. Make sure the surface you’re placing your candle on is even, away from moving air, and out of reach of children and pets. This will keep your candle and your home safe and give your candle a proper burn. You should be able to always see your candle so you can detect if it’s having any problems, so pick a location in your line of sight.

Make the First Burn Count

Your first burn is the most important, as it helps the candle burn in the future. Start the first burn right by trimming your wicks between 1/8 in. and 1/4 in. tall. You can trim the wick with scissors, nail clippers, or even a wick trimmer, as long as you get the length right. For 3-wick candles, you should burn all three wicks the first time, even if you only plan on using one at a time in the future. You want the wax to create an even surface the first time for later burns to follow. If you’re burning a candle bowl, the wax on the far edges from the wicks may not melt down to the same line as the rest of the wax, but that’s by design. The left-behind wax will drop later as the candle melts down.

Maintain Your Candle Well

After a successful first burn, you need to maintain your candle. Trim your wicks every time for proper flame control and to help the wax burn evenly. If you only want to use one wick at a time in your 3-wick candle, then use each wick consecutively and let each burn until the wax is at the same level. Do not use one wick more than the others so that the wax is uneven, as this can make it more difficult to use the candle’s other wicks. No matter how many wicks you use, never burn your candle for more than four hours at a time, as this can cause carbon buildup on the tip of the wick, which can make it harder to control the candle’s flame.

Now you know how to correctly burn a 3-wick candle!
